The inspection and DVIR duties are required by regulation. The training itself is not federally mandated for experienced drivers; it is a recommended way to learn and refresh those duties, and many carriers assign it at onboarding and as a periodic refresher.
Course Overview
Every working day, federal regulations expect the driver of a commercial motor vehicle to inspect it before driving, watch it during the day, inspect it again at the end of the day, and document defects on a driver vehicle inspection report, the DVIR. Three rules create that loop: 49 CFR 392.7 (the driver must be satisfied the key parts and accessories are in good working order before driving), 49 CFR 396.13 (pre-trip duties, including review of the last DVIR and sign-off on noted defects), and 49 CFR 396.11 (the end-of-day report listing any defect that would affect safety or cause a breakdown).
This course turns those three rules into a working daily system: a seven-zone walk-around method, the in-cab checks, the air brake tests every driver must perform, brake and tire defect recognition, coupling and cargo securement checks, en-route duties, and a DVIR done right so the paperwork protects the driver and the carrier. Lessons 5, 6, and 7 are standalone-capable brake and tire modules, built to be watched on their own.

Is this training required?
The daily inspection duties taught in this course are required by federal regulation and carry the red REQUIRED badge on screen. The course itself, as training, carries the gold RECOMMENDED badge: no federal rule mandates that an experienced driver take an inspection course. Entry-level driver training for new CDL applicants is a separate program under 49 CFR Part 380 and is not what this course delivers.
