No. No course, service, or filing edits a percentile. Scores move through operations and time: preventing violations, correcting root causes, letting old data age out, and challenging factually wrong data through DataQs. This course teaches exactly those levers, honestly.
Course Overview
Every roadside inspection and every State-reported crash flows into a federal database, where FMCSA’s Safety Measurement System sorts it into seven scoring categories, weights it, compares the carrier against similar carriers, and decides who gets enforcement attention next. Carriers are being scored whether they look or not. This course pulls the curtain back on how the machine works, taught from the SMS Methodology itself (Version 3.20) within the safety fitness framework of 49 CFR Part 385.
The course is honest about the system’s limits: SMS prioritization status is not a safety rating, no one can edit a percentile, and every number is downstream of operations. It teaches the data going in, the seven BASICs, the math from a violation to a percentile, thresholds and alerts, crash preventability review for getting non-preventable crashes off the score, DataQs done right for challenging wrong data, managing root causes instead of symptoms, and a fifteen-minute monthly monitoring ritual. Lessons 7 and 8 are standalone-capable data challenge modules.
Who this training is for
Owner-operators, drivers, dispatchers, and small-fleet safety managers who keep hearing about CSA scores and have never been shown how the system actually works.

Is this training required?
No regulation requires SMS training, so the course carries the gold RECOMMENDED badge. The underlying duties that generate the data, inspections and records, carry the red REQUIRED badge where they appear. The course never promises score outcomes and never suggests gaming enforcement.
What is included with enrollment
- 10 video lessons with closed captions, mobile friendly and self-paced
- 15-question knowledge check with an 80 percent passing score
- Completion certificate with a unique certificate ID, issued automatically on passing
- Group enrollment for fleets: assign seats to your team and track completion
How enrollment works
Enroll each learner on this page (fleets can enroll a group and assign seats later). A login email arrives within minutes. Learners complete the lessons at their own pace on any device, pass the knowledge check, and download the completion certificate instantly.
